Finding Steady Ground

Finding My Footing Again

The last few months have felt like a complete whirlwind. I went through a sudden, devastating loss with our dog that hit fast and profoundly, followed immediately by packing up for a long-planned bucket list trip. Coming home didn't bring immediate relief, everything felt confusing and heavy for me and the other pets. Right on the heels of that, we welcomed family into our home for their summer vacation. While we rarely get folks willing to make the trip out this way and we truly treasure that time together, running nonstop meant we never had a chance to breathe, process, or find any kind of new routine.

Everything felt upside down.

Now, with the house finally quiet over the last two weeks, and me being home, the stillness almost felt too quiet at first. Looking around, the garden has been a bit neglected, texts to friends have sat waiting, and creative projects were put on pause. But instead of letting that overwhelm take over, I’m focusing on what matters most: keeping myself, our home, and our pets safe, healthy, and happy.

Here are 3 small ways I’m working on finding steady ground right now.

1. Embracing the Quiet (Even When It Feels Strange)

When life goes from high-speed commotion to sudden silence, that stillness can feel unsettling. Instead of rushing to fill the silence with noise or busyness, I’m letting the quiet just be. It takes time to settle into a new baseline, and giving ourselves permission to simply exist in the space without rushing is the first step toward feeling centered.

2. Tending to the Living Things

The garden beds might be unruly and overgrown right now, but stepping outside to pull a few weeds (ok a lot of weeds!), check on the plants, and spend time in the fresh air with Fizz, it worked wonders. Nurturing the small, tangible things right in front of us has a grounding way of pulling you out of your head and back into the present moment.

3. Taking One Step at a Time

There’s a natural urge to fix everything all at once. Catch up on every unanswered message, tackle every postponed project, and instantly restore complete order. But finding steady ground doesn't happen overnight. It’s about choosing one small thing each day, putting the time back in, and trusting the momentum to build as we move forward.

That’s it for today. Nothing fancy, nothing important, just slowly putting one foot in front of the other and rebuilding a healthy rhythm.

How do you find your steady ground when life feels like it's been moving too fast?
